What kind of music does Freedy Johnston play?

When forced to slap a genre label on his music, I tend to describe him as a folk/rock artist. Whenever I say he's a singer-songwriter, I see nightmare visions of Jackson Browne and James Taylor forming behind people's eyes, and I don't want to besmirch his reputation with such insipid associations. He does sing and write songs, though . . .

How is Freedy live?

Kick. Ass. I credit one of his live shows with curing my worst-ever bout of the flu.

What can you tell me about Freedy the Person?

Not a whole lot. He was born in 1961 in Kinsley, Kansas; one of four children; moved to Lawrence, KS in the late 70s/early 80s; moved to NYC in 1985 or so; and got a record deal with Hoboken, NJ-based indie label Bar/None in 1990, moving to Elektra a few years later. He was married in November, 2003. Never having really spoken with him, I can't give any great insights into his character. He jokes well in concert, so I'd guess he's funny, and his lyrics are wonderful, so I'd guess he's intelligent.

Whatever happened to The Primitive Years?

The Primitive Years, formerly presumed to have been left to wither to nothing and scatter in the wind, sprang to full and flowering life in the harsh New Jersey autumn of 2004. Or, in less purple prose, it transmogrified into The Way I Were and was released by Bar/None in November 2004. Buy it. Now. Why are you still reading? Go give Freedy some scratch.

What are you, deef? You've got the lyrics to this song all wrong!

Sue me, alright? Actually, just email me any corrections. All assistance is appreciated!

Do you post set lists?

No. I find set lists singularly unilluminating; I don't think they tell you much of anything unless you were there, in which case you don't need a web archive. If you have photos from a show, I'll post them and credit you; same goes if you have any news to report that came up during a performance. But . . blech. Even I have my limits.

What the heck is up with the Free-T section?

It's just a joke. I thought it was funny. Freedy's lyrics with expressions like "jibba jabba" strewn throughout + cheesy composites of him and Mr. T = funny.

Is your name really MaryBeth Pinto?

NO. Again, just a joke. Whose parents are that cruel? My name's Adair. If you want to know more, I ramble at length at adairdevil.com; if you just want to know about the origins of the MaryBeth Pinto nom de guerre, please read here.

That's the current extent of the faq. Of course, if you ask questions, it will grow.
